I know - it's weird

I have a mannequin in my house. Yes, I know it's weird, but in my defence, I didn't buy it. It was a gift - a crazy-assed gift, but a gift nonetheless.

Concentration

I went to Tim Horton's this morning for a cuppa joe and spotted this steelworker at the construction site across the street.

Rollin' down the highway

My daughter and I drove to Alberta for the Christmas holidays. I snapped this shot of her as we were cruising along a southern Alberta highway.

Kick in the balls

What do you do when you're at your daughter's field hockey practice and there isn't enough light to get decent action shots? Well, if you're like me, you shoot what you can.

Driving home

I don't know why, but there's something about this pic I like. I was out looking for sunset pics last night, but got nothing. As I was driving home, I thought the sky looked interesting, so I shot this as I drove through town. Since I was driving, I couldn't check or adjust settings. I just shot through the windshield as I came around a bend.

I'm on grass

I tried my hand at macro photography one day when I noticed all the water drops on some blades of grass. I wasn't set up properly to take this kind of shot, but it still didn't come too badly.

Super powers

I was doing my best to keep the rain and cloud away for the weekend, but it appears my supernatural powers are slipping!

Lake Michigan

Woo Hoo!

I entered this pic of my daughter and her friend on the ferry into the 2007 Victoria Tourism photo contest and it was picked as a finalist. It's the first photo contest I ever entered and I have no idea why this shot would have been picked. I don't think I have a hope in hell of winning, but it feels pretty good just to have been picked as a finalist.

Tough job

Every now and again I see people doing jobs that make me thankful for the job I have. These window washers at the Luxor in Las Vegas have to be pretty good at rapelling to get through their work day.

Something fishy in here

I'm not really sure why I chose this pic today. Maybe because it's been raining for the last few days and I'm feeling like I should be growing gills. This shot was taken at Goldstream Park near Victoria back in November 2006 during the annual salmon run.

Losing sucks

My daughter's field hockey team came in second at one of last year's tournaments. Despite the trophy, the looks are not terribly celebratory.

Zoom trick

I was playing around with long exposures while exploring "the strip" in Las Vegas one night. This is an eight-second exposure of the gondola pool at the Venetian Hotel. As the shot was being exposed, I zoomed out to create the streaking effect.

Coming through!

This photo was shot at a place called Da He Ma (trans. Big Hippo) Water Park in Guangzhou, China, which was just across the street from the school where I taught. These women usually did their early-morning tai chi in the parking lot at about 6:30 or 7 a.m. - long before the place opened for the day. I was at the bus stop on this particular morning and decided to take a few shots of the ladies. Just as I snapped, one of the many motorcycle taxi dudes came ripping through the lot - and the ladies didn't even blink. If any of you know what the traffic is like in Guangzho (or any city in China for that matter), you'll understand why I think this shot exemplifies the city. Tranquility and cacophony often collide head-on in Guangzhou.

A city-wide motorcycle ban came into effect last year, so I don't know if the same mayhem exists in the city. Knowing that old habits die hard, I'd be willing to be little has changed despite the ban.

San Antonio Cop

I'm trying out this blog as a place to present a photo of the day from my collection of pics taken over the past few years.

This shot was taken in San Antonio in October 2006. There was a protest about immigration in downtown San Antonio that drew more cops and reporters than protesters.
